maintaining my groove
(never missin a beat)

maceo parker
maceo pointed at me in my pfunk1 jersey and said "you're numba one, huh?"
i said "hell yes" and danced around dead on beat so he could see da p funk on my back.
as i finished  my dance spin i saw him pointing and laughing. thats how the show started.

corey glover
(living colours lead singer) then morphed that into "we want the funk." george had left the stage and thats when corey did his thang where he walks thru the crowd singing. by this time i got my pfunk1 jersey off waving it as a flag wearing my homemade "kordell"headband (the steelers had a big playoff game the next day against baltimore, we spanked them) and the corey comes over to me. i see him coming and enjoyed every moment. i was able to maintain my groove on beat knowing everybody was watching. i spun around dancing on beat enjoying and anticipation coming up and groovin with mr glover. when i saw living colour a few months ago i liked when mr glover climbed the balcony with the mic and sang from there. so it was like all so good when i knew i was gonna be able to groove with a little mo spotlight. i cant remember exactly what i did as we danced and grooved but i know i was on it. i felt the music and i enjoyed the extra eyes on me. plus the fact that i genuinely liked corey's persona and the way he grooves made it even better. i dont know what i did i just know i funked the hell out of the moment.

these were the first times i remember maintaining my groove
among surrounding more prevalent grooves

most of all wefunk - solana beach, ca
i was doing my thang to flashlight dead on the beat and chorus as usual. michael "clip" payne had a wireless mic and was doing his part of the show from the sound booth. he was like 3-4 feet elevated with the sound man and i danced and sang right below him. flashlight was groovin and i sang the chorus where i felt it "most of all we funk, help them find the funk." i came in solid and then clip comes in with the same chorus a beat (or a half beat or whatever, not sure of musical terminology) after me.

and this threw off my groove. i thought to myself, how the hell did i come in at the wrong time? i kept groovin as the song continued and i came in again with the same chorus on the same beat. and once again clip came in after me. now i was like HELL NO!! not two times. i knew then it wasn't me.

the next night (or the next next night) same song, flashlight, same chorus i come in "most of all we funk, help them..." and george goes "on 2" and he comes in after me just as clip did. but this time i maintained my groove and kept my chorus on the "1?" while george and them sang on the "2?"

from that point on i have made it a point to maintain my groove to any music. i've also noticed and learned to maintain my groove in non-music situations, such as being in a crowd or a room of people.

riding in my car, making a left turn while staying on beat,
i snap my fingers high so all can see when i drive.

i can feel people watching me as i groove,
and over time ive learned to stay within my beat.
its like i can bring their energy and vibe into mine.

i know that certain body movements and gestures can stimulate
other human beings to feel a certain way. this also happens in other
parts of the animal world where communication is based on body movements.
an angry animal moves a certain way. a hurt animal another.
a happy animal another.

creating a beat at certain rates generate different vibes.
